VR Lab

3D Generalist
(Game Development/Immersive Environments)

Job Summary

An opening for a 3D Generalist in game development is available at the Val G. Hemming Simulation Center, Uniformed Services University.

Context

Located in the Greater Washington D.C. Metro area, the Val G. Hemming Simulation Center (SimCen) is part of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU). USU is the United States Federal Government's medical school. The SimCen focuses on the use and development of simulation for medical education, and is the nation's largest integrated simulation facility for this purpose.

The SimCen's VME Laboratory is currently building the world's largest immersive virtual reality theater for training purposes. Known as the Wide Area Virtual Environment (WAVE), the system is designed to generate a wide range of synthetic environments for immersive medical team instruction. The WAVE integrates virtual reality with human patient simulators, live actors, and theatrical effects to provide a safe and effective training environment with unprecedented realism. A total of 24 screens and 53 computers generate stereoscopic 3D images over a 1,000 sq. ft. area. A multi-channel CobraNet audio system with a combined acoustic output of more than 10,000 watts completes this audio-visual environment. The WAVE incorporates a 36 camera Vicon system for tracking. This system also doubles as a motion capture system with an effective volume of better than 3,000 cubic feet.

The SimCen is expanding its computer-based simulation capability. It plans to include the development of new simulators for cricothyroidotomy, intracranial hematoma, pulmonary artery catheterization, and situational team training.

Essential Job Duties
